Tri State Skate grand opening

trev154.jpg

The Tri State Skate shop had it's grand opening yesterday and I was there to showcase the brand new shop.  The owner Greg Kieffer is an actual skater himself. He is running the shop personally and  the shop is located upstairs from the DropIn Skatepark in Hillburn, NY.  The address is 143 Rt. 59 East Building 4E Hillburn, NY 10931. So far from my first time checking it out, the shop has much potential to supply a whole new era of skaters. When  I was there a 50 yr old man was asking Greg if freestyle frames were better for him than riding flat and he was thinking of getting the new xsjado skates. Hopefully, the older gentleman and the youth will be able to be  supplied by the new skate shop that now exists. Greg opened this shop upstairs from a dominant skateboard park facility. To keep up to the daily buzz at Tri State Skate check out here ........enclosed in this blog are some pics of the shop and a few pics of Trent and Chris tearing it up at the skate park under the skate shop..

Huge NYC Session

mjjjjjj.jpg

What started out as a few skaters meeting up at a spot turned out to be one of the biggest 5 boro sessions this year. We had great skaters from the all over the Tri-state area. We were Lucky enough to skate John Bound, an old school legendary spot. Since there was more than 20 of us, the only other spot we could have skated without getting our session busted was Flushing Meadows park. Although I did not get many pictures because I also skated, I was able to snap a few, and boy let me tell you that this was a session I would never forget. This is how NYC sessions should go down, where we all unite and do what we do best! Thanks to all the heads for showing up, hopefully there will be more sessions like this one in the summer. Check out my future issue of "Art of Rolling" for some exclusive photos from this session.

A Glimpse into New York City's Art of Rolling

Issue one March 2009
sotocover.jpg

Me and my finance Layla have been working on a free zine for skaters. Our goal is to basically represent NYC skating to it's fullest and show skaters all around what the product of their skating can be. This zine is free and is dedicated to the preservation and growth of the sport. Although it may not seem much, but we are dedicated to printing monthly zines like this one in the future. As of right now, black and white prints is all we could afford however, it does not downgrade the skating or the skaters featured in the zine. This is the first issue of Art of Rolling. Thank You!!! to all the skaters who contributed to this issue.

Bronx Box Session

zsxdfg.jpg

(Click Pic for more Photos)

Fun comes from all aspects of skating. A simple box with a rail attached to it can spell tons of fun for skaters. The concept of "from start to finish" spells out enough joy for a skater to be content all night. Last night, when I went back to the location of the Boogie Down Box Showdown, I witnessed this type of pure skating. My wife came with me to the competition a few nights before and she had really wanted to skate the down box. Up until yesterday, I think she thought she was getting away with not hitting it, but within a hour of arrival and after a few attempts, she threw down a few of the sickest tricks on that box. I was proud of her, and had a great night. I'm uploading these pictures here tonight so that all you skaters who were there have a nice photo of you to  take back the memories of that night, I hope you enjoy!! ( I spent almost all night editing them)

Boogie Down Box Competition

Yesterday was the Boogie Down Box Competition that I found about abou the night before. I didn't expect for there to be such a huge turn-out, since they only promoted it the day before. But from the moment I stepped into the venue, which was indeed a unique experience within itself, I saw tons of kids skating and throwing it down. Little did I know that this would be a competition I would never forget...

While me and my wife drank some cold ones, I analyzed what angles I would need for the competition. One thing was for certain, I was sure glad I had brought my fish-eye. I posted up right next to the box where I got to witness some of the sickest tricks I have ever seen. All the New York locals skated at a level which made me proud to be a part of the New York skate scene. I got to meet up with a lot of friends, and get a bunch of photos, some of which you will see above and in the near future. The pictures taken do not show justice to this event. Every picture you see was most likely spun into, then into something else, and spun out.

I really would love to thank those who skated at the comp. I don't think I have ever been so proud to be part of something which we always strive to make bigger. Last but not least, I also would like to congratulate Trevor Johnson for taking the best trick and the win! (When you get a chance lend me five dollars!!)

Session With Trevor and Alex

Click picture for more pics

So about 80% of my day is dedicated to my son, on  rare occasions if i have about 25$ i can  get a baby sitter and be able to go out side and enjoy the outside world. I Sal Zaso called me early and told me he'd be with mike and they where going to session flushing Meadows, my other boy tato called me 5 minutes earlier to skate flushing and i had just spoke to Trevor Johnson and he mentioned flushing, wow great idea rite well wrong my son was with me as usual and the huge bus trip with  baby carriage and camera equip wasn't my ideal way to spend the rest of the day, but out of nowhere moments later my mom called and said hey il be home at 2.30 and if u want IL watch  london {myson} this was great news and i quickly got ready to leave only catch was i had to be home at 5 O'Clock!! i could blah blah blah about this but to be honest everything tended to work out extremely well i showed up at flushing and got to see a large amount lolol 8 skaters there not counting us, there was about 100 skateboarders as usual, when Trevor showed up he was with Alex Nunez of whom i haven't seen or spoke to for a while it was good to see 2 skaters with such talent rolling together {i could;t imagine what sessions they must throw down} , previously i asked Trevor if he mind throwing down a picture for the day because he was at flushing just to have a lil fun mess around sesh, he told me he would backslide this ledge i calmly holded my breath and asked with a grabbb?" he said of-course lol wow,, well to skip the long story Trevor threw down a ridiculous backslide down this old school legendary down ledge and Alex wasn't messing around but for the fun of it threw down a kindgrind with un imaginable steez, when that was over it was about 4.40 and i was feeling the late vibe all over, somehow we insisted to get a few more pictures and ended up at this new ledge a beautiful smooth fast barrier ledge, within 20 minutes they basically summed up more in that little time then people in whole days skating,, not to mention they where just messing around having a good time  in this warmer of days out in new yorks frigid weather, i manage to get home around 6 O'Clock and couldn't have been happier with the results of such a random sesh,, thanks trev and Alex for putting ur life on the line and showing me that i definatly do need to get out more often,

Session Under the Highway

angelo1.jpg

Click pic for more pictures

So todays session started out like every other session in new york where we find ourselves driving to about 10 spots all of which we don't like or get kicked out and find ourselves just dying to skate somewhere new or more skate friendly, well tonite little did i know that i would find the spot i was praying for, originally i reamber seeing a skate boarder hit a little cement bank and saying oh wow that looks cool but not exactly rollerblading enjoyable so i pushed it outtah thought out of mind, so on this long drive of un happy skating i suggested we check out the little bank i mean what else and how else could the session get any worse, i was with my wife and Will Hoover we where all fiening to skate even if it was just a little spot that i suggested, when we finally remember and found the spot i was jaw dropped and couldn't believe it but there was about 6 skateboarder built cement banks that vary in size , launch, and not to mention u could hit them in a straight line, i really could not believe it and just started shredding it up each bank led me to the next and considering it was about 11 at night and we started at 8 this nite was heading for the better, the only negative about this spot was the light that lit up the joint turned on for 3 minutes or so at a time an the next moment ud be in total darkness heading for your makeshift bank, i decided it was time to make the best of it and scooped out and planed some tricks that would make good photos on these little banks , little did i know that id have some pictures taken that night that would turn out to be some of the most memorial, with the help of my wife taken the pictures these photos would not have been possible,, on another note i returned to this spot a few days later and couldn't be more happier with it during the day  and its going to be my new rain spot for sure..  Will Hoover manage to get some pics which i say are something really refreshing to see since iv skated with will since he first started back then and he has progressed to sometimes i feel the level of dangerousness 8 out of 10 tricks will does would land him in the hospital if he doesn't land it but i guess thats where he finds the joy in it now just stomping out huge hammers, keep a eye out because im going to be doing tons of work with Will Hoover for future projects,

So i got my camera 1 day ago and decided to head over to this REDBULL snowboarding contest it was my first day with the camera so i decided to bring my 30d aswell, i showed up early hoping to get a media pass but while waiting for the sign in to get there {showed up way to early} i decided to take some pics of them setting up the ramp, i forgot to mention how it was 16 degrees out side and standing on top of snow doesnt make it worse, so within 15 minutes my 2 batteries that where fully charged died, it was so cold my batteries died instantly , so i trekked 13 blocks in the cold to charge my batteries in a pizza shop, when i got back 1 hour later the media line was packedddd so i said let me just get a good spot near the jump, the pics taken are of my 10 am - 9 pm standing in the cold in one spot concert style,, so hope you enjoy.  P.S i sure love my new camera

My New Camera

liol.jpg

For many people having money to spend on a camera is pretty much the same story about how a camera is just a camera and  price range, they don't mind spending about 300 - 600$ on a mid range camera, truth is I'm no professional but i do know you can get a great picture from almost any camera out there now , around 2006 i got myself a nice konica dimage k7 camera which was great but didt have any lens to add on and the delay for catching sport shots was about a 2 second lag, i still amaze myself at how many great pictures i took with that camera even with all the lack of better knowledge, soon after i got myself a canon 30d  now this was the period in my life where i felt my photography took a turn, i finally had a camera that worked with my skill and helped me get more comfortable with all the manual functions and night shot capabilities, now the turn back was now i had this thousand dollar camera and i couldn't just bring it around with me like it wasn't going to break or get confiscated by the cops while trespassing somewhere but over time i just kept it side by side with me and we have done fine since, oh yea my konica dimage dropped from a loading dock into a puddle and has never worked since, Now i recently checked up on my camera and found out it dropped in price almost half the price you can get yourself a new 30d for around 500$ if u know where to look, while looking up the camera i was mad at how something i spent so long to save up for could drop to a price that would have let me own it years ago , with all that said i ended up finding a canon 5d for sale used for under a 1,000 it reminded me of when i could not afford the 5d 2 years back and wanted one  so bad but had to get the 30d instead, so long story short i am now waiting for my new camera well old new what ever to get in the mail an arrive , i really hope this camera can help me over come some more obstacles in photography and help me to achieve a picture greater then the ones in the past, now it will take some time but i am willing to start from scratch again and learn to take great photos,  wish me luck and stay tuned for future pictures with my new camera =0)

My Engagement

autum047.jpg

So today was my girls 18th birthday. I planed a big present , i was going to ask her to marry me.  It was 11 degree's in new york so since she told me she never went ice skating , well i thought it would be a great idea to take her. We had a blast , we went from figure skates to a lil more easier hockey skates. After ice skating i brought her to a beach that was freezing beyond comprehension. I then told her that i was going to take a picture with me and her in it to document her birthday, so i set up my tripod and put my camera trigger on a 10 second delay. And when i pressed the photo button i ran to her and dropped on my knee and pro claimed my love and ask her to marry me. The picture above is the actual photo from the moment i did it. I have known her for a while now and i know that she is the one i want to be with for the rest of my life. And the greatest part is she said yes

The Autumn Bowl

autum031.jpg

(Click pic for more)

The Infamous Autum Bowl in Brooklyn New York

If your not familiar with the Autum Bowl down in greenpoint Brooklyn then its probably because you weren't invited. This skate bowl once called the Tylenol bowl mostly-because years back Tylenol sponsored it and then pretty much left it to a limited exclusive amount of people like 5 to take care of it. years later it location was in jeopardy because the building surrounding its location was set on fire. since then it has come along way.

So years back when i heard about this bowl i was quick to think how i could find this bowl, threw researching and asking around i found out a big downside! This wasa SKATEBOARD ONLY BOWL. And since the only owners had there own key access , others didt so the chance of me skating this bowl faded away, UNTIL YEASTERDAY =0)

Grand Opening: Florida Tripxmasflorisd172.jpg Click pic for more

I am just opening my site and am excited to share with everyone my photos. Although the site might not be much now, it is a work in progress and will be updating it regularly.
To start things off, my family and I took a 2 day car ride of hell down to Florida. We didn't expect anything from skating except for the free local skatepark in Deltona that isn't the greatest, but was gold coming from New York. This was especially in the 80 degree whether when ironical we were sledding  in the snow 3 days before. Now one thing you should know about this trip and my previous trips to Florida skateparks, is that there aren't really any rollerbladers; just bikers and skateboarders. On this occasion, we met 3 Orlando local shredders; they showed up and welcomed us like all rollers should. They had put us onto an incredible skate bowl down in Oviedo skatepark.  but if you are ever out there, be sure to check that bowl out; it has got lines in there for days. Thanks John!

We were feeling great after skating a few different parks, and felt that we should turn our family vacation into a mini tour. We went to one big Vans skate-park in Orlando where the skateboarders outnumbered the rollerbladers, one thousand to 10. We then met Patrick White, who was nice enough to show us a local street spot at 11 o'clock at night, then without warning, he sparked my interest in this place i herd about a few months ago. A secret abandoned amusement park called Splendid China. Next thing we knew, new years fucking eve, we are skating in this abandoned theme park that looked like Ancient China after a nuclear attack. Needless to say, there was tons of stuff to skate there, including the infamous Buddha gap. My girl had never skated a gap so big, this gap is about 10 feet high and has a sketched out run up. Me being a photography, skater and adventurer, i didn't know weather to take photos, skate or explore. I ended up snapping some photos of Patrick and his boys killing it, and my girl throwing three huge attempts down the infamous Buddha gaps. When the Florida trip was all done, it was much better than expected. Even though the two day car ride back mellowed the experience.
